CEMEX products used to build the deepest diving pool in the world

August 22, 2019

CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (“CEMEX”) (NYSE: CX) announced today that it is participating in the construction of the deepest and largest diving pool in the world—the “Deepspot”—built near the capital city of Warsaw, Poland. CEMEX is supplying special cement for the implementation of this complex project.

CEMEX is supplying special cement from its Rudniki cement plant near Częstochowa, Poland, for the construction of the "Deepspot" project. Thanks to this cement, the project’s contractor, BUDOKRUSZ S.A., can produce two classes of structural concrete for the construction of the diving pool’s foundation plate. This type of cement works well for the construction of concrete elements and structures in hydrotechnical construction, as well as to produce concrete for underground construction.

"This extraordinary project offers a number of challenges for material suppliers and contractors in terms of the quality of products and technologies. Another important challenge is the logistics for the timely delivery of materials to the construction site, with the Rudniki cement plant located almost 200 km away. We are proud to participate in the construction of the “Deepspot” project through our CEM III/A 42,5 N NA LH HSR special slag-based cement that features a low alkali, low heat of hydration, high sulfate resistant, and lower CO2 footprint. Its remarkable characteristics and high quality make it a perfect product for this type of challenging construction project," said Rafał Gajewski, CEMEX Commercial Development Director in Poland.

The advanced design of the pool will enable the perfect adjustment of the facility to the divers’ training needs. The pool will be 45 meters deep and accommodate 8,000 cubic meters of water—27 times more water than a standard 25-meter pool. In addition, the complex will feature a special underwater tunnel, which will allow visitors to observe people training at the deepest depths. While the "Deepspot" will be available to anyone who is interested, it will mostly become a real attraction for professional and novice divers, as well as lovers of free or breath-hold diving. The “Deepspot” is scheduled to open in Autumn 2019 in Mszczonow, near Warsaw.

The owner of the "Flyspot" aerodynamic tunnel is responsible for the construction of the “Deepspot” pool. The “Flyspot” project was an international finalist in “Buildings” category in 2016 edition of the CEMEX Building Award.
